Students entering this class are expected to have mastered the material from French 101. You will continue to study French pronunciation and phonetics. You will learn to ask for and give directions regarding transportation, ask and tell someone where to go, speak of past events, tell time, express conditions and reassure someone. Other communicative skills which will be taught in 102 include: describing the day's events, giving compliments, reminding someone to do something, telling what is permitted or forbidden, asking for and giving information about the weather, indicating frequency (toujours, jamais, souvent), and speaking of future events. You will learn to express possibility and obligation, ask for an opinion, and give advice. While continuing the use of the present tense, you will be introduced to two new tenses: immediate future (aller + infinitive) and past tense with être and avoir. The following verbs will be presented: mettre, prendre, pouvoir, vouloir, connaître, savoir, être en train de + infinitive. You will use il y a, il n'y a pas de, and the response si to a negative question. You will learn direct and indirect object pronouns plus the use of indirect questions and il faut/il ne faut pas + infinitive. Topics from French culture, civilization, and literature will be presented in reading and writing passages which grow in length and difficulty as your vocabulary increases. This class
will cover Dossiers 4-6 of Reflets 1.
