The Alliance Française of Louisville
French 301

Course level: Advanced

Come and join us for a new approach to a conversation class.  In the course of the 8 week session, we will be progressively viewing 3 classic French-language films from 3 different countries with a particular eye toward discussing the various cultural elements found in the films as well as the social issues touched upon in the films.  The films:  a fun and joyous Truffaut film, L'Argent de poche (F.Truffaut, France); the comedy La grande séduction (J-F Pouiliot, Québec) and the critically acclaimed drama La promesse (J-P & L. Dardenne, Belgium).  As we view each film over a series of 2-3 weeks, we will review useful vocabulary/expressions and touch briefly upon questions of grammar that may arise, as we pursue different forms of discussion, including interesting elements of the film-maker's art, the motivation and description of the characters, conjectures concerning the future direction of the plot, recounting of narrative events and/or descriptions of scenes, reflections upon the larger social issues and/or cultural elements suggested by the film.
