French 101

Course level: Complete Beginner

The pronunciation and intonation of French sounds and letters will be introduced. You will learn how to greet someone and make introductions, indicate nationalities, count, and spell. You will learn to express possession, agreement, appreciation, tastes, and preferences. You will learn to distinguish between the two French forms of "you", describe someone, indicate the date, accept and refuse, give and ask for reasons. The grammatical concepts to be taught in 101 include: definite and indefinite articles, distinction between masculine and feminine, possessive adjectives, subject pronouns, negation, contractions, gender and placement of some adjectives, and the interrogatives qui, où, quoi, and quel(le). You will learn to use the following verbs in the present tense: être, s'appeler, -er verbs (1st group), avoir, faire, aller, lire, dire, and -ir verbs. You will learn the prepositions chez, de, à, and prepositions preceding the names of countries. Short reading and writing passages on current French topics will be presented.

The class will cover Dossiers 0-3 of Reflets 1.
